Petanque can be played MANY places, that is what makes it very versatile for travelers. As long as the surface is fairly hard-packed and somewhat level (to keep the boules from rolling on and on and on….), it will work. So avoid deep sand (the boules won’t roll) or soft grass (the boules will make dents

in the soil and won’t roll well either).

Use your imagination! 

For example, a gravel walkway in a public park can be a great place to play. So can an empty site in an RV park. If you are RV/Van boondocking out in the wilderness or on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land, there are LOTS of areas with some hard-packed dirt or grass you can play on.
